Featured Photographers | Wild Child Photography

Wild Child Photography is a portrait lifestyle experience. We specialize in editorial story art and are inspired by nature, classic tales, childhood and simple elements which evoke a story balanced with laughter and quiet moments to create a timeless collection. Wild Child is a business born out of the our love for capturing our children, art, and light and is located in Holton, KS. Our goal together is to create a business that uniquely uses art and classic stories to create beautiful portraits. For our style we love classic and simple. We love to use natural or timeless props. If we had the time (and money!) we would be out at antique stores and flea markets every chance we had. We don't want to overwhelm our images or subject with lots of things but love to give them something to hold or do interact with if we can.

Our Approach We wanted to focus on shooting just what we love and do it in an artful way. We love shooting children, families, and senior portraits. We so monthly storybook sessions that we come up with and develop a small story around. Stories include Little Red, Little Boy Blue, and Lost Boys. We also help create custom themes with the goal of the images telling a story specific to a child, senior, or family experience. We like to approach each session with the question, "What if?" What if Little Boy Blue was eating pancakes? What if a superhero had dog? What if a princess enjoyed frosting cupcakes? For example, in our minds Little Red is a little girl who can do lots of things which allows us to be more creative with the stories we tell. After we have our "idea" we melt it down to the most basic elements. We use simple props, simple natural settings, simple activities, and simple outfits. By keeping the shoot simple we allow our subject to shine and tell their own story. Props might include flowers (which we love to use!), vintage books, natural elements like sticks or pine cones, and simple capes. We prefer a homemade and earthy look to our styled shoots.

Working together has brought out the best artist in each of us. We are able to encourage and inspire each other. One obstacle we had to overcome was merging our photo editing styles. We created our Wild Child Watercolor Action Set to mimic the look and feel of film by using grain and soft toning to give our images a constant artful soul.

Both of us taught beginner photography workshops before merging to form Wild Child. So we knew from the start we wanted to teach classes as part of our business plan. We created the Wild Child Photography Workshop. This workshop is a one day hands on class held in Holton, Kansas. We are also currently developing an interactive photography manual for the iPad. Teaching inspires us as much as shooting!
