It's no secret that we love the Magic Hour Foundation. Their mission to gift cancer warriors and survivors with free photography services immediately struck a nerve and I knew I had to volunteer.
We all have been there when family members have struggled with this disease and many of us have lost amazing friends. This is a way for our community to show our support and love.
I've been trying to write this blog about the Magic Hour Foundation all day. I even considered paraphrasing what is on the Magic Hour Website. But I decided to go another way. I'm going to tell you why I volunteered.
I grew up with my grandparents, so my aunts were always very involved in my life. When I was a teenager, they were closer to my age than my grandparents, who were ancient. So we were extremely close. My aunt Lori was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 32. It was a long long struggle full of ups and downs. I still can't make myself go into it without getting extremely upset. But we lost her. My grandmother still keeps her photos all over the house, has tattered snapshots of her in her purse and even has her drivers license in her wallet. Those precious pictures are all my grandmother has left of her middle daughter. It's excruciatingly beautiful. I want everyone affected by this horrible disease to have those memories and mementos So I volunteered for my area in South Carolina.
I have yet to photograph my first Magic Hour Session and I know it will be an emotional roller coaster. But it is something I need to do as a photographer to give back to the world.
